Moulin Neuf or Moulin du Mitan in 1400

In 1400, the Duke of Burgundy no longer wanted Poligny merchants to beat and whip cloth in other towns. The "Moulin Neuf" was built on the Ereu canal. Moulin = engine. For 500 years, this engine would beat, whip, grind, drill and saw. The building burned down in 1941. What remained of the wheel disappeared under an accumulation of tuff. Once the tuff was removed, a carpentry workshop occupied the site until 2017.

The renaissance

In 2017, André and Marie-Julie, the owners of the house upstream, acquired the building. André is originally from Salin. His father was a cabinetmaker. They restored the wheel and mill in 2020. Two years later, they decided to turn it into a gîte. In February 2023, after dismantling the floor above the wheel, the masons arrived to consolidate the building and provide a solid foundation for the future gîte. 15 months later, in June 2024, the project was completed. We've come a long way in 15 months, but we've also come a long way in 624 years! Today, a remote control allows our guests to enjoy the rare and joyful spectacle of this wheel in motion. Rest assured, though, that the hard work remains. Maintaining the canal that brings water to the mill requires sustained activity. The next step could be to generate electricity. Of course, this would only be able to compensate for the gîte's consumption if our guests were to show tremendous energy sobriety.

Beauty, workmanship, the craftsman's hand

Craftsmen designed the space, worked the materials, pulled the cables and ran the pipes. The work - we value it - involves sharing, emulation, aesthetics, quality and comfort, respect for resources and people. Left to the eye, the result plays with levels and volumes, materials, light, viewing angles and colors. Under the roof, a framework that looked ordinary before the construction work, will have created a surprise. Under the living room's glass slab and footsteps, water gushes out at your command. You've just awakened the mill's light, powerful wheel. Let your heart beat.
